You can preview files external to SharePoint – e.g. stored in file shares.
Preview automatically crawls FileShares and generates images ready to instant preview in SharePoint search results.
The crawling process is highly configurable and you can even define that less frequently used locations to be accessed “on-demand”. This is highly relevant in scenarios with many millions of files or/and when files are frequently updated.

| ON-DEMAND | Whenever a file is being requested by the front-end, the preview image is generated and stored for Instant preview next time. |
All files in FileShares can be instantly previewed and included for in-document-search
So you can continue to stored content in FileShares and leverage the low Storage Cost, instead of uploading to SharePoint Content Databases.
